Countrymen Group Riding Guidelines
- First and foremost, be safe. If you wanna ride fast and wild, pull outta formation and do that shit on your own.
- Ride with the pack; give enough room so the man in front and rear can maneuver, but keep the formation tight enough so cages don’t feel they can cut in*.
- Arrive at the departure point on a mechanically well-maintained motorcycle, with good tires, a full tank of gas and a grateful attitude.
- Leave your ego at home.
- Wear appropriate attire.
- Notify the Ride Leader of any concerns: mechanical, emotional, skill level, etc.
- In urban areas ride in staggered formation so that the pack can maneuver quickly if need be and not run into another biker, but also not get broken up at a yellow light.
- On highways, country roads, etc. give everyone “working space”; one to two bike lengths between bikes, depending on the speed and technicality of the road… not so close you hit in an emergency maneuver, and not so far that cars feel obliged to move in and break up the pack*.
- Keep the rider behind you in view. If he disappears for more than a minute, stop at the nearest safe place and wait until the rider reappears. If, after waiting for 2 minutes, the rider does not reappear, backtrack along the route until the rider is found and render whatever aid is appropriate or possible. For riders that are lost or have mechanical problems, simply park the bike in an obvious and safe position, hopefully where you last saw the preceding rider, and wait for someone to come back for you. Also the “tail-gunner” will undoubtedly come upon you and can assist you. The “tail-gunner” will be chosen by the Ride Leader and will be an accomplished rider who also knows the route.
- Inform the Ride Leader of any plans to depart from the group before the ride is completed. Tap your head and wave out of the group when you need to break formation.
- Do not pass members of the group while en route. If you wish to ride at a more spirited pace, notify the Ride Leader at the earliest opportunity that you wish to change your position or precede the group for all or a part of the ride. The larger the group, the higher the risk of accident, so if there are 5 or more riders, we ride within 10minutes of the speed limit unless otherwise directed by the Ride Leader.
- Wheelies and other stunts conducted among members of the group are not acceptable. Do that shit on your own time.
The Ride Leader will wait until the entire group is together after traffic signals, before changing roads or thoroughfares and after gas or human endurance breaks…. So be safe, relax and enjoy the ride.
* If a cage needs in to get on or exit the highway, don’t be a jackass. Slow down, and let them on/off, then rejoin the group. The riders in front will slow and wait for y’all to catch up.
Proper staggered formation with a reasonable measure of distance. Remember, road conditions, traffic, and rider experience will affect speed and distance. As a general rule, leave your brother and yourself space to make an emergency maneuver if needed without taking down the whole pack.
Every group’s hand-and-arm signals can vary, but this is a good list to memorize. Just like on a road march, pass it all the way back.
